“Only the educated are free.”

-Epictetus

Many things in life determine how successful a child will be and what attitudes that child will have but, arguably, nothing is more important than the quality of education that child receives.

Education Options

As a parent of a K-12 student in Georgia, the options available to you in choosing the school your child attends are growing.  Today, you have the ability to educate your child in one of the following types of schools:

- Traditional Public

- Public Charter

- Private (secular or religious)

- Homeschool

Paying for Your Child’s Education

As you probably know, traditional public and charter schools are publicly funded, in large part, by the property taxes paid in the county where you live. For most parents, the inability to pay for private education has kept private school from being a realistic choice. Home schooling is also not available to most parents because of the time away from work that is required.

Fortunately, two pieces of legislation have been signed into law in recent years making private school more affordable to more Georgia families.

The Georgia Special Needs Scholarship (SB 10) became law in 2007 and has provided scholarships to nearly 900 special needs students to attend another public or private school of their choice.  Learn more about SB 10 here.

The Tuition Tax Credit Scholarship (HB 1133) became law on May 14, 2008 and provides for scholarships to deserving students who apply to and are approved by a Student Scholarship Organization (SSO).  SSOs determine student eligibility requirements and whether a scholarship will be awarded.  Please go here to learn more about HB 1133 and find an SSO for your child.
