| SB 10 No Help
I applied for my son to transfer within county under SB 10 he wasdenied. The School Board said my son's needs could be met at theschool we were zoned for just the same as the school of my choice. They had space and could provide the services identified in the myson's IEP. Just as SB 10 states. This bill fails to help when theschool can say no just because they want to. I e-mailed Cathy Cox andseveral senators. Everyone claims to not have the authority to overturnthe Oconee County School Board. He is now home schooled because of thehorrible experiences he has had in the school "we are zoned for". Whata shame for a 9 year old boy with Aspergers. If anyone has anysuggestions for help please let me know. My problem is I am nowunemployed due to the economy and can not afford lawyers. | Posts: 1 |

| Indeed, under SB 10, a local school board may choose not to grant a transfer request. Under the law, the public school should have "available space and [have] a program with the services agreed to in the student“s existing individualized education program."
However, a new law, HB 251, allows for any child to transfer to another public school within their assigned school system, so long at the school has space. By July 1, parents should be notified by each local school system of which schools will be eligible to accept these transfer students.
Another option is the private school option under SB 10. This allows students to transfer to a participating private school using a scholarship in the amount that the state would have paid to educate your child. Currently, there are two school participating in the Athens area. Additionally, another new school choice program, HB 1133 (the Tuition Tax Credit Scholarship program), can help with additional private school costs.
